POEM

DEDICATION TO SAHID KARIMI

(Victim of Domestic Violence.
Immolated by her husband in Victoria, February 2018)

Two Went Walking

There was nothing left there.
Only Pain.
Infliction of pain; cruelty.
By one who was supposed to love.
But hated.
Hurt her; took her soul
Kicked it ‘round the kitchen.

She, so young, fragile and of beauty
With a small infant
To keep safe
But there was no safety there. None.

So she escaped, not knowing
Where she was going
With that child.
Which street? Where to go?
Aimless; keep walking, walking,
Walking.

No-one, no thing. Loneliness
overbearing.
Hurt. Help me! (Her cry within).
Homeless. Vulnerable.

Crows circled, wings fluttering
One took pity
Dived down, led her to a police
station
Help the homeless!

But the crow’s wing
Was still attached!
Homelessness, helplessness.
Ineffectual blindness.

Bureaucratic nightmare!

Lack of empathy.

She went home … to hell.

No-one. No thing. Nothing.

This a valediction.

Speak to us; lend us your spirit
Sahid Karimi.
