MINUS 18 LGBTIQ CHARITY SCREENING OF
NATIONAL RELEASE FROM THURSDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2018
Director: Joel Edgerton
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe
Duration: 115 min
Joel Edgerton’s second foray into directing, after ‘The Gift’ deals with the subject of “conversion therapy”, the method by which religious organisations attempt to “reprogram” gay children. In Boy Erased, the parents enrol him, against his will, in a facility where they are confident that his attraction for members of his own sex can be cured.
The film centres on Jared, played by Lucas Hedges (Manchester by Sea). He’s the son of Marshall (Russell Crowe), a Baptist clergyman, and Nancy (Nicole Kidman), who shares her husband’s devotion. They’ve expressed concerns for Jared for some time and the boy seems frightened about his apparent sexual orientation. In college he has a crush on another boy (Joe Alwyn), who rapes him and then reports him as a homosexual.
Marshall confronts Jared and packs him off to a conversion camp run by Victor Sykes (Edgerton), a charlatan who lacks any psychiatric or medical qualifications.
The film is based on real characters and it ends with photos of the real Jared who wrote the memoir on which Edgerton’s screenplay is based. The end credits also inform us that about 700,000 young people have undergone such treatment in the U.S.
The film is superbly acted by an excellent cast. Hedges depicts the anguish of Jared with painful conviction.
It’s an important film, very disturbing and timely. Many of us have had no awareness that ‘conversion therapy’ exists. Even more troubling is the fact that such ‘therapy’ is being carried out in Australia!
We must unite in activism with LGBTIQ groups to have this shocking ‘therapy’ annihilated!
Footnote: At the screening a representative from ‘Minus 18’ said that the LGBTIQ were uniting in activism against ‘conversion therapy’ in Australia at the next federal election. ‘Conversion therapy’ is carried out by ‘right wing’ religions who are fanatical about ‘God’.
